Panther Labs is an early-stage startup that provides a platform for security teams to write Python detections to find and triage alerts in real time.

A problem their users face daily is lack of an effective method to test detections against real data before the detections is made live.
Project Details
1 month | Team of 2 | Lead Designer (Myself) and Product Manager
My role
- Conduct and synthesize user interviews and derive insights
- Prepare and facilitate ideation workshop with extended team
- Evangelizing design thinking and process
- Wireframes and visual design for the concepts and the final solution
Design Process
01  Research & Synthesis | Journey mapping, customer interviews and problem definition
02  Ideation | Workshop
03  Implementation | Prototype & delivery
01  Research & Synthesis
I along with the product manager held interviews with 3 Panther users. We wanted to understand “how were users writing detections using the panther tool?” and “how can the tool be improved to ease their workflow?”

Insights & Opportunities
Insights & Opportunities
We analyzed the interviews and the user journeys to get a better understanding of the user needs, which were then converted into how might we statements.
02  Ideation
Using the HMW statements, I conducted an ideation workshop with engineering and product teams. The workshop was designed to come up with as many ideas as possible, before selecting the favorite and story boarding it.

03  Implementation
I designed the interface for the different phases. This included multiple rounds of iterations before finalizing the design direction.

Final thoughts
The most challenging aspect of this project was getting members from product and engineering teams to participate in the ideation workshop. The team was initially skeptical and didn't see value in the time spent. I had to ask for patience and playing along with me. By the end of the workshop the decisions and the artifacts validated the process and its efficacy, even setting a new paradigm for future projects.
